Most date night game lists want you to print something or buy a box. These do not. They are sorted by how much effort they take, starting with the ones you can play right now from where you are sitting.
Games that need nothing at all
No box, no printing, no shopping. If you can both sit down, you can play these.
- Two truths and a lie, but only about this week rather than your whole life.
- Guess the answer: one of you answers a question, the other guesses what they said first.
- The rating game: pick a category and both rate five things out of ten, then defend the gaps.
- Twenty questions, where the answer has to be something in the room.
- The story swap: each tell one story about yourself the other has never heard.
- Would you rather, played by writing answers down and revealing together.
- First impressions: describe honestly what you thought the first three times you met.
- The alphabet date: name something you would do together for each letter, taking turns.
- Highs and lows, but for the whole year rather than the day.
- Fortunately, unfortunately: build a story one sentence each, alternating the two words.
- The interview: five minutes each where one asks anything and the other must answer.
- Categories: pick a topic and alternate answers until someone repeats or stalls.
- The compliment game: three things you noticed about the other this week, specific ones only.
- Never have I ever, played honestly and without drinking.
- Guess my rank: each of you privately ranks five things, then guess the other's order.
Games with a pack of cards or a phone
Slightly more setup, still nothing you need to buy.
- A card each: high card asks a question, low card must answer.
- Photo roulette: scroll to a random old photo and each say what you remember of that day.
- The playlist game: add three songs each that describe the other person.
- Map darts: open a map, close your eyes, point, and plan a trip there in five minutes.
- Screenshot the last thing you searched and explain yourself.
- The budget game: plan the best possible date for twenty pounds, separately, then compare.
- Album cover: pick a photo of the two of you and name the album and its tracks.
- Two-minute pitch: each pitch a holiday and the other has to pick one honestly.
Games for a longer night in
For when you have a whole evening and no plans.
- Cook the same recipe in separate rooms, then compare results.
- Watch something one of you loves and the other has never seen, then swap next week.
- The life timeline: each draw your life as a line with the five turning points marked.
- Blind taste test with whatever is in the cupboard.
- The house tour: each show the other three objects with a story attached.
- Plan your ideal ordinary week together, hour by hour, and see where you disagree.
- The letter: write each other a letter to be opened in a year.
The easiest version of all of this. Ottermates sends the two of you one question a day. You both answer, and neither of you sees the other's answer until you have both had your say.

What can we play on date night without buying anything?
Two truths and a lie about this week, the guessing game where one of you answers a question and the other guesses what they said, or would you rather played by writing answers down and revealing together. All three need nothing but the two of you.
What is a good game for a couple at home?
The best ones give you new information rather than just a winner. Guessing what your partner would answer beats a trivia game, because you learn something even when you lose.
How do you make date night at home feel different?
Change the format rather than the location. An ordinary evening becomes a date night when there is a structure to it, which is why a game works better than simply agreeing to spend time together.
What games work for long distance date nights?
Anything where you answer separately and compare afterwards: the guessing games, would you rather, and the rating game all work over a call or by message with no loss.
