For the two of you

The couple games app you actually keep playing

Most couple games are an evening: you get the box out, you play for an hour, and it goes back in the cupboard for four months. This is the other shape. One question a day, both of you answer, and neither sees the other's answer until you both have. It takes a minute and it survives a busy week, which is the only test that matters.

How the game works

A game in three steps, once a day

Both of you get it

One link

One of you starts and sends a link. There is no account needed to look around first.

01

Answer today's question

In your own time

Whoever answers first waits. Nobody can peek, so nobody can shade an answer after reading the other's.

02

Reveal together

The good part

Both answers open at once and your shared streak ticks up a day.

03

Why the withheld reveal is the whole game

Take the reveal away and this is a questionnaire. With it, there is a real moment: you have committed to an answer, you do not know theirs, and you find out at the same time they find out yours.

That is also the only mechanic here that cannot be cheated. Read your partner's answer first and you will adjust yours, every time, without meaning to. Both of us have done it. Locking the answers is what makes the game honest, and honest is the entire product.

Built for two, not scaled down from a party game

A game for two has no audience. That breaks most party formats immediately, because anything built on performing or on embarrassment needs a room to perform to, and it stops being fun by the fourth turn when the room is one person.

What works for two is new information: the game is good if it ends with you knowing something you did not know that morning. That is why guessing what your partner would say beats trivia about them, and why a game with no winner outlasts one with a scoreboard.

The streak is the meta-game, and it is deliberately gentle

Both of you answering is what moves the streak, so it is a shared number rather than a personal one. There is nothing to win and nothing to lose to a rival.

It is also forgiving on purpose. A streak that punishes you for a bad week is a streak you delete after a bad week, and the whole point of a daily thing is that it survives the weeks where nothing is going well.

If you want a game night as well

This site has the offline versions too, free, with nothing to install. There are 30 date night games for two, 80 truth or dare questions, 160 would you rather questions and 60 how well do you know me questions with a scoring method.

We also compare the app against the alternatives, including the ones that are not ours, in the best couple games.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

An app two people play together rather than one person plays alone. Most are packs of questions or challenges you work through in a session, like a digital card deck. Ottermates is the daily shape instead: one question a day that you both answer separately and reveal at the same time.

Yes, because the game is the two of you answering separately and revealing together. One of you starts and sends a link to the other. You can look around before making an account.

About a minute to answer. The part that takes longer is the conversation that sometimes follows a reveal, which is the point rather than a side effect.

No, and that is deliberate. Whoever answers first waits. If you could read your partner's answer first you would adjust yours without meaning to, which quietly removes the reason to play.

Yes. Answering happens whenever each of you gets to it rather than at the same moment, so a time difference changes nothing about how it works. There is more on that on the long distance page and in the long distance date ideas guide.

It is free to install and there is a paid subscription for the full thing. The price is on the home page rather than hidden behind an install.
