How we compared the apps
We checked the US App Store descriptions on 17 September 2026. Competitor features below are what their publishers describe, not results from a hands-on test. We have not tested every competitor or ranked their design quality. The source listings are linked below so you can check details before choosing.
We build Ottermates and describe its own mechanics directly. That gives us a commercial interest in this comparison. The free browser game and offline alternatives are included because subscribing to an app is not necessary to have a good game night.

Check before choosing: whether the packs you want are included in the access offered to you, and whether the play format suits one shared phone or your remote setup. A listing alone does not establish that every pack is free or that partners can answer asynchronously.
Couple Joy: games plus shared relationship features

Consider it if: tending a virtual space together sounds enjoyable in its own right. Check before choosing: the access terms for the features you want and whether the extra activities appeal to both of you. We have not established that its question content is better or worse than another app's.
Five offline couple games you can play tonight
You do not need a subscription for these formats. Start with one round and keep going only if you both want to. Agree that either person can skip a question without explaining why.
- The prediction game: choose one question, such as what your partner would do with a free afternoon. Each person writes their own answer and their prediction of the other's answer. Reveal together and talk about what surprised you. Use our questions for couples if you need prompts.
- Would you rather: offer two options, choose privately and explain the choice after revealing it. Decide whether you are guessing each other's answers or just comparing preferences. Our would you rather questions give you a starting list.
- Two truths and a lie: each person writes three claims about their week, with one invented. The other guesses the invented claim, then asks about one of the real stories. Keep the claims light enough that neither person feels put on trial.
- Guess my ranking: agree on five films, meals or places. Rank them privately, then predict your partner's order. Reveal both lists. If you want a score, give one point for each correctly placed item.
- Twenty questions: one person chooses an object, place or shared memory. The other gets up to twenty yes-or-no questions to identify it. Agree on the category first so the task is solvable.
How to play when you are apart
For an asynchronous round, send one question and agree not to open each other's answer until both are ready. You can use messages and a scheduled reveal, or an app with a built-in separate-answer mechanic. Avoid a shared document where the first answer is visible while the second person is writing.
